Continuing high rates of small magnitude earthquakes, the great historical earthquakes of 1811-1812 and large paleoseismic earthquakes define the NMSZ as one of the major intraplate seismic zones of the world [Johnston & Schweig, 1996]. You warrant that you are the sole owner of all rights in any content you submit, and that anyone appearing in your photos or videos has granted you permission to provide them to NewsOK.com. [21] Other faults in the area are the Blue Creek Canyon fault which is connected to the Meers fault at its northwestern end, the Broxton Fault Complex northeast and the Mountain View fault to the north[3] which intersects with[32] and is also connected to the Meers fault. Relocated Hypocenters and Structural Analysis from Waveform Modeling of Aftershocks from the 2011 Prague, Oklahoma, Earthquake Sequence by Marius P. Isken* and Walter D. Mooney Abstract We present an analysis of aftershocks with M L >3 from the 2011 Prague, Oklahoma, earthquake sequence, an intraplate sequence of moderate-size earthquakes The Meers fault is part of a group of faults that lie between the Anadarko Basin and the Wichita Mountains. [18] The Meers fault is the only Mid-Continent fault scarp[21] and has been called the "finest" such scarp east of the Rocky Mountains. [52], The Meers fault presently is largely[14][53] aseismic, with no earthquakes recorded along its Holocene trace[18] or any evidence of aseismic creep[54] although minor seismicity has been recorded[55] and a M4.2 earthquake close to Lawton in 1998 is close to the southeastern end of the Meers fault. Despite the considerable variability in seismic … The west-northwest-trending rift appears to follow an older Proterozoic line of structural weakness in the crust. [65] Other regional faults such as the Washita Valley fault which runs parallel to the Meers fault may also be capable of causing earthquakes. The quake, which was centered in the town of Puturge, struck at... TIRANA, Albania (AP) — Albanian prosecutors indicted 16 investors, construction experts and local officials Friday on murder and other charges resulting from fatal building collapses after an earthquake a year ago. 0 people just felt an earthquake. [5] The fault scarp is located on private land;[6] the southeastern part runs through farmland and the northwestern part runs through hilly terrain. [35], Reconstructions of the intensity of the Holocene earthquakes indicates magnitudes of Mw 6.75–7.25[18] with possibly similar intensities,[48] with the terrain north of the fault being shifted upwards and leftwards relative to the terrain to its south;[18] this latter movement[35] and the position of the Meers fault are consistent with the tectonic stress pattern of North America[7] which favours movement along the Meers fault. [62] Assessing the hazard potential for the Meers fault suffers from similar problems[44] but it is considered the largest seismic hazard source of the central United States[63] as it has the potential to cause large earthquakes[31] and earthquakes in the central United States usually affect much larger regions than those of the western United States. A high-resolution seismic-reflection survey over part of the Meers fault scarp in Comanche County, Oklahoma, provides an improved understanding of the shallow structure associated with the fault zone. [47] The underground rupture on the other hand might reach a length of 70 kilometers (43 mi). However, Pleistocene sediments and Holocene alluvium have been offset, indicating fault movement during this time. The mechanics of these intraplate earthquakes remain poorly understood. intermediate-depth intraplate earthquakes, and a double seismic zone is observed5. (AP) — Five low intensity earthquakes have rattled part of the Wichita area since Thanksgiving, but a Kansas expert on seismic activity says residents of the state's largest city should not be overly concerned about a larger, more destructive quake occurring there. The major intraplate seismic zones are limited to specific segments and are not distributed along the lengths of the ancient structures. [3] The nature of the surrounding rocks also influences the expression of the Meers fault, as it has a more pronounced scarp in erosion-resistant rock units. [35] Recent research has suggested that the whole fault may be of Quaternary age with little activity during the Pennsylvanian. [59] The activity of the Meers fault and other seismicity has been related to a continent-spanning fault zone[60] and there might be a relation to the Brevard Zone in Atlanta as well. 2000 years of migrating earthquakes in North China: how earthquakes in midcontinents differ from those at plate boundaries. [17] The scarp was described as a Permian fault scarp before Holocene activity was discovered[70] and made known by Gilbert 1983 and Donovan et al. [64] In particular, it indicates that the Mid-Continent is not free of earthquakes and that the absence of recent seismicity does not rule out the presence of active faults. Andrew Cullen / Warwick Energy & University of Oklahoma STATEMENT of the PROBLEM: The southern edge of the Anadarko basin in SW Oklahoma is defined by a regional fault system that records Pennsylvanian-aged inversion of a failed Cambrian intra-continental rift; an aulacogen formed during the break-up of … [35] Additional faulting appears to have occurred over 12,000 years ago, but evidence thereof was partly eroded away during a time of a wetter climate[41] and prior to the Holocene the fault might have been inactive for 100,000–130,000 years. [51] In general, the movement direction of the Meers fault is contentious. New Madrid seismic zone (NMSZ), the east Tennessee seis-mic zone (ETSZ), the Charleston seismic zone (CSZ), and the New England seismic zone (NESZ). The central Virginia seismic zone (CVSZ), New Madrid, MO, seismic zone, and the central Oklahoma intraplate seismic zone are all bisected by major river systems. Southern Oklahoma has long been recognized as the home to a series of very large and complex intraplate structures that are exposed in the Wichita and Arbuckle Mountains. [28], The fault separates Cambrian-Proterozoic[29] igneous rocks from thick[3] Cambrian-Ordovician age[30] carbonates to the northeast. [42][12] The slip rate has been estimated to be 0.02 millimeters per year (0.00079 in/year), which is typical for intraplate faults. The zone is the site of the four largest intraplate earthquakes in the United States, the 1811–1812 sequence with estimated magnitudes of 7.0 to 7.6 (49–51). grating. Earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.5 or higher, All content submitted must be your original work. Seismic hazard and risk assessment in the intraplate environment: The New Madrid seismic zone of the central United States Continental Intraplate Earthquakes: Science, Hazard, and Policy Issues Widespread groundwater-level offsets caused by the M w 5.8 … These features are the result of early Paleo-zoic extension and late Paleozoic compression. Here, Levandowskiet al. Strike-slip movements probably played a role both phases of deforma - tion. When? [33], All these faults lie in the area of the Frontal Wichita fault system, which is located between the Anadarko Basin to the north and the Amarillo-Wichita uplift to the south[3] and separates the two. Information regarding earthquakes in Arkansas including types of faults magnitude and intensity scales, seismology, seismic waves, epicenters (New Madrid Seismic Zone and the Enola Swarms) and more. [58] The discovery of Holocene activity at the Meers fault was a surprise to scientists[71] and attracted the attention of geologists[72] after two publications in 1983 highlighted the young movements on this fault;[17] it is the best researched fault east of Colorado. Click the button on the right to let us know if you felt an earthquake. [17] It is possible that the fault rupture was limited by geological structures that occur at the northwestern end of the Meers fault[45] where it splays out. The Meers fault does not seem to be involved. Meers Fault is a fault in Oklahoma that extends from Kiowa County to Comanche County. The red circles are earthquake locations from local seismic network analyses. What magnitude? [30] The development of the Meers fault may have been influenced by the South Oklahoma aulacogen. Intraplate earthquakes also present significant seismic hazards, especially because they can affect densely populated regions with little preparation for seismic shaking. Title: Intraplate Earthquakes Description: Intraplate Earthquakes Intraplate seismicity of the New Madrid seismic zone in the central USA superimposed on a topography map with warmer colors indicating higher elevations. Tectonics , 16 , 585 –595. [13] Additional faults in the region are the Cement, the Cordell and the Duncan-Criner faults. [34] The fault system, which also includes the Meers fault[35] as its southern margin,[36] was active during the Mississippian to Permian, generating a total offset of about 12 kilometers (7.5 mi). Walter and his fellow researchers at the Oklahoma... An insurance company policy’s boilerplate exclusionary language is the latest victim of salt-water induced earthquakes in Oklahoma. [31], The Meers fault is among the most prominent tectonic structures in the region. PLEASE NOTE: We are aware of an issue that keeps iOS10 Chrome users from reporting their location. [9] Finally ductile folding,[25] vegetation and landform variations have also been recognized on the Meers fault. [35] The possibility that faulting continued for another 30 kilometers (19 mi) along its northwestern end is equivocal[13] with some evidence indicating that recent faulting was limited to Comanche County;[46] research published in 2019 indicates that the northwestern segment did not move during the 1,200 BP earthquake but was active in the 3,400–2,900 BP event. The CVSZ, the New Madrid seismic zone, and the central Oklahoma seismic zone (COSZ) are all bisected by major river systems. Prosecutors in the city of Durres, one of the areas most-devastated by the... Oklahoma's chief earthquake researcher has developed cutting-edge software that uses machine learning to sniff out tiny tremors. The magenta line shows the boundary of the Mississippi embayment structure that, … The new height of the world's highest peak is 8,848.86 meters (29,031.7 feet), which is slightly more than Nepal’s previous measurement and... TOKYO (AP) — A Japanese court on Friday revoked the operating permits of two nuclear reactors for having inadequate earthquake safeguards, a ruling that challenges safety assessments conducted by the nuclear regulator and could influence the outcome of other court cases. Towns close to the fault are Cooperton, Meers, Apache, Fort Sill,[3] Treasure Island and Elgin;[4] Oklahoma State Highway 19, Oklahoma State Highway 115, Oklahoma State Highway 58 and U.S. Route 281 cross the fault[3] and Oklahoma State Highway 44 might do so as well. [40] During the history of the fault considerable uplift took place on its southern side[31] while the recent movement has generated an opposite movement. Earthquake case studies. Educational resources concerning earthquakes. [11] Underground, the fault may be over 100 kilometers (62 mi) long. The Mississippi embayment is a broad trough filled with marine sedimentary rocks about 50-100 millions years old and river sediments less than 5 millions years old. While the fault was active during the Permian-Cambrian, movement possibly accompanied by earthquakes took place during the Holocene and formed the fault scarp, with one earthquake occurring less than 2,000 years ago. Meers Fault is a fault in Oklahoma that extends from Kiowa County to Comanche County. It is marked by a 22–26 kilometers (14–16 mi) long conspicuous fault scarp but the fault extends beyond the ends of this scarp. [13] The erosion/sedimentation patterns[22][23] and the path of drainages[10] such as Canyon Creek may have been influenced by movement along the fault,[24] and topographic ridges are offset. Preliminary analysis of the stream gaging stations on rivers in and near the COSZ suggests that the earthquakes may be associated with the Canadian River system. [43], The Meers fault is the only fault on Oklahoma which has generated a rupture on the surface,[44] resulting in about 5 meters (16 ft) of vertical offset[34] over a 43 kilometers (27 mi) long distance. A hydrograph The map below will update every minute and show all user reported earthquakes in the last 30 minutes. [58] Earthquakes in Oklahoma have been observed in the areas of the southern Oklahoma aulacogen and of the Amarillo-Wichita uplift; in southwestern Oklahoma they are rare and of moderate intensity. That’s the result of a ruling handed down this month by Oklahoma’s Court of Civil Appeals, and that ruling could impact many dozens of energy companies being... Oklahoma is becoming a hotbed for earthquakes, and this special coverage page maps out every earthquake that happens in Oklahoma. Other areas, such as the Wabash Valley and East Tennessee Seismic zones also produce earthquakes on a regular basis. [54], The USGS national hazard map states that the Meers fault has a recurrence interval of 4,500 years[44] but estimates range from 100,000 years to 1,300 years. The Meers fault is part of a group of faults that lie between the Anadarko Basin and the Wichita Mountains.. As the rate of earthquakes have been increasing in the New Madrid Seismic Zone and in other parts of the Central United States, such as in Oklahoma, there are concerns that intraplate tectonic pressure may be driving these trends. The New Madrid Fault Zone, sometimes called the New Madrid Fault Line, is a major seismic zone and a prolific source of intraplate earthquakes (earthquakes within a tectonic plate) in the southern and midwestern United States, stretching to the southwest from New Madrid, Missouri. An insurance company policy’s boilerplate exclusionary language is the latest victim of salt-water induced earthquakes in Oklahoma. For example, a major intraplate seismic zone may have existed along the MVG south of the NMSZ as suggested by extensive sandblow features produced by several large earthquakes (Cox et al., 2007); at this location, CCD may be associated with the intersection of the MVG with the Alabama‐Oklahoma transform fault (Thomas, 1991). [12] The dates have been obtained through radiocarbon dating on soil in trenches dug in the fault scarp[13] and of offset alluvium deposits. 1983. [3] The igneous rocks belong to the Amarillo-Wichita uplift and are much more magnetic than the carbonates; this has been used to trace the fault with aeromagnetic techniques although the igneous rocks also reduce its visibility in reflection seismology studies. TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A strong earthquake off the eastern coast of Taiwan shook the capital city of Taipei on Thursday night. 1A inset) is defined by alignments of earthquake epicenters. Over the past few days, Oklahoma has been hit by a sequence of significant earthquakes, including a magnitude 5.6, the largest quake to hit Oklahoma in modern times: A magnitude-4.7 foreshock struck 20 miles northeast of Shawnee and 46 miles east of Oklahoma City on Saturday, November 5, at 2:12 a.m. local time at the epicenter. [12], Two to four earthquakes occurred during the Holocene in the last 6,000 years,[17] one of which occurred 1,100–1,300 years ago and the other 2,000–2,900 years ago. [38], The Meers fault has been in existence for most of the Phanerozoic. [39] More fault movements occurred in the Permian and the Pleistocene[13] although there are no post-Permian rock formations in the area that could allow an estimation of post-Paleozoic movements. [12][20] The scarp marks the Holocene section of the fault. Today, instrumental seismicity outlines four main arms that extend for more than 200 km from west of Memphis, Tennessee, into southern Missouri ( … The New Madrid seismic zone (NMSZ) within the Reelfoot rift (Fig. Did you? Globally, most of the seismic energy release associated with IPEs occurs within old rifts which contain LSCs most favorable for … MPa (0.1-1.0 bar) of pore-fluid overpressure (pressure above hydrostatic) to trigger an intraplate earthquake. [64], The fault was discovered during field work in the 1930s[68]–1940s[39] and is named after the town of Meers; previously it was known as the "Thomas fault"[21] after a ranch named George Thomas Ranch[69] and then as the "Meers Valley fault". It is marked by a 22–26 kilometers (14–16 mi) long conspicuous fault scarp but the fault extends beyond the ends of this scarp. The existence of intraplate earthquakes remains a deep scientific mystery with strong societal implications that needs to be solved by innovative approaches. o Occurred in the New Madrid Seismic zone in Missouri Dec 16, 1811 Arkansas 8.1 January 23, 1812 Missouri 7.8 February 7, 1812 Missouri 8.0 o MMI of XI at epicenter, severe damage What is the recurrence interval for great EQ's in this region? Other areas, such as the Wabash Valley and East Tennessee Seismic zones also produce earthquakes on a regular basis. We present a new hypothesis that major intraplate seismic zones are restricted to places where concentrated crustal deformation (CCD) is overprinted on large‐scale basement structures. State seismologist Jake Walter spent time early in the coronavirus pandemic to focus on this big project. Information on how to be prepared in case an earthquake hits here in Arkansas. [19] Because the scarp is not present along the entire length of the fault, it is subdivided in a southeastern section in Comanche County and a northwestern section in Kiowa County, with only the southeastern section featuring a scarp. [16], A conspicuous[17] 5-meter (16 ft) high and 26-kilometer (16 mi)[18]–22-kilometer (14 mi) long fault scarp just north of the Wichita Mountains is noticeable on Google Earth;[17] it has formed on the Holocene part of the fault[18] and continues southeastwards in the form of more subtle scarps[12] although it may not exactly coincide with the path of the fault. The New Madrid Seismic Zone (/ ˈ m æ d r ɪ d /), sometimes called the New Madrid Fault Line, is a major seismic zone and a prolific source of intraplate earthquakes (earthquakes within a tectonic plate) in the Southern and Midwestern United States, stretching to the southwest from New Madrid, Missouri.. Seismic Risk of the Meers Fault, SW Oklahoma: A Hoary Giant or Great Imposter? [18] In the wider area around the Meers fault such as in the Texas Panhandle, the Arbuckle Mountains and around Enola, Arkansas there is evidence of recent seismic and fault activity which may be part of a larger seismic zone. Locations north of the NMSZ, such as the closely … [14] One interpretation is that the Meers fault is a "back-thrust" that dips northwards. Intraplate earthquakes (IPEs) result when the local stresses become comparable with their regional counterparts, i.e., hundreds of megapascals. The New Madrid seismic zone, beneath the central Mississippi River valley, is undergoing considerable study as it is the most seismically active area in the eastern United States and also because it experienced at least three devastating earthquakes in 1811–1812 (Nuttli, 1982; Penick, 1981; Johnston, 1996; Johnston and Schweig, 1996; Tuttle et al., 2002) ().

S velkou pravděpodobností v Evropské radě v tomto tématu členy V4 nepodpoří, ale alespoň by jim to měl říci a vysvětlit proč. Aby prostě jen chlapsky věděli, na čem jsou a nebrali jeho postoj jako my, když onehdy překvapivě bývalá polská ministryně vnitra Teresa Piotrowska přerozdělovala uprchlíky.

Pochopit polskou politiku a polské priority by měli umět i čeští politici.

Published

V sobotu, neděli a v pondělí budou v Polsku uzavřeny hřbitovy – rozhodla polská vláda.
